Types by Format

Classic Slots

Three reels, a single row in most cases, and a small symbol set built around fruit, bars and sevens. There is usually no bonus round at all, and the top prize comes from lining up the highest symbol on the one payline available. Video Slots

The default format today: five reels, three or four rows, a themed symbol set, and at least one bonus round. Video here refers to the software rather than the visuals, meaning the reels exist only as an animation. That freedom is what allows everything that follows in this guide, because a reel that is not physical can change size, split, expand or disappear mid-spin.

Grid Slots

Square or near-square layouts, commonly six by six or seven by seven, where the idea of a reel largely disappears. Symbols are removed and replaced rather than spun, so a single stake can produce a long chain of consecutive wins. Grid games are usually paired with cluster payments rather than paylines, which is why the two labels appear together so often.

This is the classification that actually changes how a game plays, and the one worth understanding before the others.

Payline Slots

Ways to Win Slots

Patterns are dropped entirely. Matching symbols pay as long as they appear on adjacent reels starting from the left, wherever they sit vertically. Counts such as 243 or 1024 come from multiplying the symbol positions on each reel. More combinations qualify, and individual payouts are correspondingly smaller.

Megaways and Variable Ways

Cluster Pays Slots

Reels and lines are both abandoned. A win requires a minimum number of matching symbols touching each other horizontally or vertically anywhere on the grid, and the cluster pays according to its size. Fixed Prize Slots

The great majority of games. The top prize is expressed as a multiple of your stake and never changes, so a stated maximum of five thousand times the stake pays that whether you bet twenty cents or ten euro. Progressive Jackpot Slots

A slice of every qualifying stake feeds a shared pool that grows until somebody wins it, then resets to a seed value. The prize is a cash amount rather than a multiplier, and it can keep climbing for months. The trade is that the money funding the pool comes out of what the base game would otherwise return, so progressives typically feel tighter between jackpot wins. Drop and Timed Jackpots

A middle option where the prize is guaranteed to be awarded before a threshold, whether that is a time of day or a maximum value. The award is often triggered at random rather than by a symbol combination, so qualifying is about being in play rather than hitting anything specific. Bonus Features Are Not a Separate Type

Free spins, multipliers, expanding wilds, hold and win rounds and the rest describe what a game does during a feature, not what kind of game it is.
