Stake Blocks Access in Ireland After Regulator Intervention
Stake has blocked access for users in Ireland after engagement with the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), whose licences for online betting took effect on 1 July 2026. The Irish Times reported on 14 September that the site had been closed to Irish users the previous week, and a Stake spokesperson told iGaming Expert that the company will look to apply for a licence under the new regime.
What the Regulator Said
Responding to The Irish Times, the GRAI said that following its interventions, “operators, including two major prediction markets and a major international online gambling platform, have geo-blocked their services, which means that they have voluntarily restricted access to their platforms for users from Ireland”. The regulator declined to name the companies. The newspaper writes that the gambling platform is understood to be Stake, and the prediction markets Polymarket and Kalshi.
The GRAI added that it is “working closely with operators who have geo-blocked to ensure that consumers in Ireland are promptly refunded all monies deposited with these operators”, and that other operators have also closed their betting activities in Ireland after its engagement. On 14 September, SBC News found that visitors from Ireland see the message “Due to licensing restrictions, access to Stake from your current location is not available.”
A Licensing Regime Rolled Out in Phases
The GRAI’s first licences cover remote betting and betting intermediaries. The regulator says licensed operators must verify age, pay out winnings, refuse credit and credit cards and close accounts on request, and that applications for further licences, gaming included, will open during 2027 and 2028. The Irish Times notes that Stake’s casino-style games are not yet covered by the regime and could have stayed online, but the company chose to block its entire site.
“Stake closed registrations in the Irish market, and we will look to apply for a licence to operate under the new regime,” the spokesperson said. iGaming Expert and SBC News both point to licences Stake has obtained in Denmark and Mexico, alongside the Curaçao registration that underpins how Stake.com is licensed.
What It Means for Players in Ireland
Ireland already appears among the restricted jurisdictions in Stake.com’s terms. For customers in Ireland with money still on the site, the GRAI’s refund statement gives no timeframe. Whether a betting site holds an Irish licence can be checked on the GRAI register. Because gaming licences are not open for applications before 2027, none of the crypto casinos often compared with Stake can hold a GRAI licence for its casino games.
